Six Days from Kuala Lumpur to Penang via Cameron

A city-to-city route with highland tea, a forest boardwalk and Penang heritage stops.

No booking fees and the full price before you book

What this plan covers

This six-day route suits travellers who like a busy city opening, a cooler highland pause and walkable heritage days in George Town. The pace is full: Kuala Lumpur’s central sights come first, the second day is a transfer, Cameron Highlands gets a tea-and-forest day, then a long road leg leads to Penang. Expect the first George Town evening to be food-focused and reserve a full day for the hill. Book the TBS-to-Tanah Rata coach first, then arrange the four-wheel-drive package required for Mossy Forest access; that shapes the highland schedule.

Dataran Merdeka was formerly a colonial-era cricket field and is now associated with Malaysia’s national independence. The Federation of Malaya flag was raised here for the first time on 31 August 1957, and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building stands opposite. The open square gives you space to take in a landmark tied to Malaysia’s independence, with the Sultan Abdul Samad Building facing it across the grounds. Pause to notice the building’s exterior before moving on.

Good to know

Use the open public square as a pause before the short walk onward; the Sultan Abdul Samad Building faces Dataran Merdeka. Start at Dataran Merdeka in central Kuala Lumpur; the square and building make a straightforward opening to the city-centre day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Kuala Lumpur Cameron Highlands Penang itinerary work in six days?
Six days gives you a city day, a transfer and a full tea-and-forest day in Cameron Highlands, followed by George Town and Penang Hill. The main trade-off is time spent on the intercity journeys, especially the coach from TBS and the road link from Tanah Rata. Keep those transfer days focused on their listed stops.
What should I book or check first?
Secure the TBS-to-Tanah Rata coach and confirm the departure and arrival details on your ticket. Arrange the Cameron Highlands travel-agent package for Mossy Forest access, which is limited to four-wheel-drive vehicles. Also reserve a timed Petronas Twin Towers visit and check the funicular’s last uphill and downhill trains before day six.
What should I wear and bring for the route?
Pack comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a rain layer and a light warm layer for Cameron Highlands, which is cooler than lowland areas. Suitable clothing and trekking equipment are recommended for Mossy Forest. Dress modestly at mosques and temples, and remove shoes where asked.
How do I get around between the stops?
Walk between the central George Town heritage stops and use road transfers for the longer links. KTM Komuter serves Batu Caves, bus and taxi services run from TBS to Tanah Rata, and Rapid Penang bus 204 serves the Penang Hill Funicular Railway Station. Road travel takes longer in traffic; use your ticket for coach times.
Where should I stay during the route?
Use Chinatown / Pasar Seni for the Kuala Lumpur city day, Tanah Rata for the Cameron Highlands overnight, and George Town’s heritage core for the Penang food and walking days. These areas match the route’s main bases and keep the local stops close together.
