What this plan covers
This Melaka day trip from Kuala Lumpur suits travellers who want a full day of heritage sights without an overnight stay. Start with the coach from TBS, then cover the compact old town on foot, using a local bus or ride between Melaka Sentral and the centre. The pace is full: historic buildings and museums in the morning, lunch and temple visits in the afternoon, then a river cruise before the coach back. Arrange your outbound and return coach tickets first, and choose a day when the museums are open. Jonker Walk’s night market runs only on some evenings.
Opening hours, prices and routes can change, so check the details before you set off.

The Stadthuys was completed in 1650 and served as the Dutch governors’ residence and office until British control began in 1824. Christ Church was completed in 1753; its red exterior dates to 1911, and it remains an active Anglican church. The square brings the Stadthuys and Christ Church together in one compact stop. The Stadthuys houses the History and Ethnography Museum, with displays on Portuguese and Dutch artefacts, Peranakan domestic life and Malay heritage.

The Portuguese built a fortress around St. Paul’s Hill, completed in 1548, and also built a church on the hilltop. The Dutch later made the church a Protestant church and named it St. Paul’s Church. Climb to the hilltop church ruins, identified with the remains of the Portuguese-built Chapel of Our Lady of the Hill. The old fort once stood around the hill, linking this stop to the nearby gate at A Famosa.
Good to know
Take your time on the uphill approach, then look over the church ruins before continuing downhill to the fort gate. Walk from Dutch Square; the route is 0.3 km and takes about 4 minutes on foot.

Porta de Santiago was a gate of the Portuguese fortress, A Famosa. The British-directed dismantling of the fort began in 1795, when Melaka and its fortress were temporarily handed over to the British. Pause at Porta de Santiago, the only standing physical remnant of Melaka’s fort. Its position close to St Paul’s Hill makes it an easy continuation of the morning’s walk.
Good to know
Take a close look at the remaining gate, then continue on foot to the nearby palace museum. From St Paul's Hill, walk 0.12 km; it takes about 2 minutes on foot.

Good to know
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; closed on Mondays. Plan this stop for a day when the museum is open. Walk from A Famosa; the route is 0.14 km and takes about 2 minutes on foot.

Art galleries, food outlets and souvenir shops give you more places to browse, pause for a meal or pick up a memento.
Good to know
The night market runs only on some evenings, so check whether your travel date is Friday or Saturday before planning around it. Walk from Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum; the route is 0.59 km and takes about 8 minutes on foot.

The Chan family acquired the three terrace lots in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it opened as the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum in March 1985. Look closely at Thia Besar, the reception hall, where tall panels carry Chinese silk embroidery beside wood-and-marble furniture. Elsewhere, Dutch, Portuguese, Malay and colonial design influences meet lavish blackwood pieces and rooms with Peranakan touches, giving you plenty of detail to compare.

Distances are estimates, measured in a straight line from the middle of your stops.
Is one day enough for a Melaka day trip from Kuala Lumpur?
You can cover the old-town sights in one long day, but there is a coach ride at each end. Keep museum visits focused, have lunch near Jonker Street and leave time to reach Melaka Sentral for your return coach. The Jonker Walk night market runs only on some evenings.
What should I arrange first?
Book your outbound and return coach tickets from TBS first, then organise the sightseeing around the museums’ opening days. If your group has 15 or more people and needs a Mandarin guided tour at the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, request it at least one month ahead.
What should I wear and bring?
Choose light clothing and bring water and rain protection for a long day of walking. At Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered, keep quiet in prayer areas and remove shoes where asked. Unsafe weather or river conditions may pause or close the cruise.
How do I get around Melaka during the day?
Use a local bus or ride from Melaka Sentral to Dutch Square, then walk between the old-town sights. BAS.MY route M100 runs on a city-centre loop; check locally whether it serves the square. After the cruise, take a ride back to Melaka Sentral for your coach to TBS.
How do I get to Melaka and back without staying overnight?
Take a coach from TBS to Melaka Sentral and book the return coach for later that day. The road leg is 129.0 km, and the coach ride usually takes longer than the drive, so check the departure and arrival times on your ticket. Leave enough time to reach the terminal after your final stop.
