A One-Day George Town Walk: Murals and Mansions

Follow street art, a clan house and two mansion visits before finishing at an art space.

No booking fees and the full price before you book

What this plan covers

This full day suits walkers who like public art, heritage buildings and a guided mansion visit. The rhythm starts outdoors on Armenian Street, moves to Khoo Kongsi and a timed Blue Mansion tour, then continues to Pinang Peranakan Mansion and Hin Bus Depot. Arrange the Blue Mansion tour first: its fixed daily slots shape the order of the day, and the venue recommends booking ahead. You can walk between the first four stops; take a car or e-hailing ride for the final transfer.

Day 1

5 stops · about 4.3 hrs + about 40 min travel
1

Armenian Street murals

Culture 45–60 minutes
Armenian Street

Armenian Street (Lebuh Armenian) is in George Town, Penang, and has street art among its heritage-area attractions. Ernest Zacharevic painted Kids on Bicycle as part of a George Town street-art project created alongside the 2012 George Town Festival, with interactive murals pairing painted images and real objects. Make time to spot Boy on Chair, then scan nearby walls for other painted scenes. Noticing public art among the street’s everyday facades gives this first stop a relaxed start before the day’s indoor visits.

Good to know

Set aside the full 45–60 minutes for Armenian Street and nearby art; look up as you walk rather than treating this as a single-photo stop. Start on Armenian Street in George Town; this is the opening stop for the day.

Khoo Kongsi

Culture 45 minutes
Khoo Kongsi

Khoo Kongsi is a Chinese clan house associated with the Khoo surname clan; it was completed in 1906. The complex has an ancestral hall, an opera stage, administrative buildings and a museum about the Khoo family. The opera stage gives the visit a clear focal point. Pause there, then take a slower look at how the site brings clan life, performance and family memory together.

Good to know

Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last admission is 4:45 p.m. Allow about 45 minutes for your visit. From Armenian Street murals, walk about 4 minutes on foot to Khoo Kongsi.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (the Blue Mansion)

Culture 45 minutes
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (the Blue Mansion)

Built in the late 19th century as a home for Cheong Fatt Tze’s descendants, the mansion also served as his business base and housed the Chinese Vice-Consulate. After his death in 1916, it deteriorated; conservationists completed its restoration by the end of 1995. Look closely at the blend of Hakka and Teochew influences, from Scottish cast-iron balusters and Cantonese timber lattices to Art Nouveau stained glass and Chinese porcelain decoration. The guided visit also takes you through the reception hall, central courtyard and second-floor museum exhibition.

Good to know

Daily guided tours run at 11:00 am, 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm. Book ahead; tours are conducted in English, and other languages can be arranged in advance. From Khoo Kongsi, walk about 19 minutes on foot to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (the Blue Mansion).

Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Culture 1 hour
Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Built in the late 1890s on the site of the Ghee Hin secret society headquarters, Pinang Peranakan Mansion served as the residence and office of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee. The dining rooms are worth a close look: elaborate golden woodwork sits alongside Chinese plates and cups, European furniture and distinctive floor tiles. Compare those details with the carved-wood panels, English tiles and Scottish ironwork elsewhere inside.

Good to know

Daily hours are 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; plan to arrive within that window. From Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (the Blue Mansion), walk about 13 minutes on foot to Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

Hin Bus Depot

Culture 1 hour
Hin Bus Depot

Hin Bus Depot is a former bus depot in George Town, converted into an art space in a partly renovated Art Deco building. It began operating as a creative space in January 2014 in connection with Ernest Zacharevic’s “Art is Rubbish is Art” exhibition. End with contemporary art in a former transport setting, a change of pace from the day’s historic houses. Leave time to look through the venue and see what is on during your visit.

Good to know

Hours are noon–7pm on weekdays and 11am–7pm on weekends. The Sunday pop-up market runs from 11am to 5pm. From Pinang Peranakan Mansion, it is about 4 minutes by car or e-hailing ride, longer in traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the George Town street art walk enough for all five stops?
Yes, if you treat it as a full day and anchor the schedule around a booked Blue Mansion tour. Start with the outdoor murals and Khoo Kongsi, then fit in both mansion visits before Hin Bus Depot. The first four stops link on foot, while the final transfer is by car or e-hailing.
What should I book or check first?
Book the Blue Mansion tour first because its guided visits run at fixed times and the venue recommends reserving ahead. A 2:00 pm slot leaves room for the morning stops. Keep Khoo Kongsi’s 4:45 p.m. last admission in mind, and check current opening details before setting out.
What should I wear and bring for the day?
Wear comfortable shoes for the walking links and bring water plus a rain cover for the outdoor stretches. Lightweight clothing is practical for a long day on foot. If you add a temple or mosque, dress modestly and remove your shoes where asked.
How do I get around between the stops?
Walk from Armenian Street murals to Khoo Kongsi, then continue on foot to the Blue Mansion and Pinang Peranakan Mansion. For the final leg, take a car or e-hailing ride to Hin Bus Depot; the drive is about 4 minutes, longer in traffic.
Where should I stay for this route?
The George Town heritage core is a convenient base if you want to begin near Khoo Kongsi and return to the same area. This site has 380 stays within 1 km of the clan house. Check availability for your dates and pick a base that suits your walking plans.
